What you're seeing — and what it likely means
Slow to boot and slow to open everything
Classic sign of a mechanical hard drive or a nearly full drive — an SSD upgrade is usually the fix.
Fine at first, then slows down the longer it's on
Often thermal throttling from dust build-up, or too many background apps consuming RAM.
Slow only when many apps or browser tabs are open
Usually not enough RAM for your workload — a RAM upgrade helps if your model supports it.
Sudden slowdown with pop-ups or odd behaviour
Can indicate malware or unwanted software; needs a clean-up and check rather than a hardware change.
What to do right now
Do
- Restart the laptop — it clears background processes that quietly accumulate over days of sleep/wake.
- Check how full the storage drive is; a drive close to full slows the whole system down.
- Note exactly when it's slow — always, only under load, or only once it's warm — it points us at the cause.
- Back up anything important; if the cause turns out to be a failing drive, you'll be glad you did.
Don't
- Don't install 'PC cleaner' or 'speed booster' tools — they rarely help and often add background load.
- Don't keep using it hard if it's also very hot; overheating that causes slowdown can shorten component life.
- Don't assume it needs replacing — many slow laptops just need the right upgrade or clean-up.
Can you keep using it? Will it get worse?
You can keep using a slow laptop — it's an inconvenience, not a hazard — unless it's also overheating or the drive is failing.
Software-related slowness stays roughly the same. If the cause is a dying hard drive or heat, it can get worse, and a failing drive risks your data if ignored.

How we diagnose a slow laptop
- 1Check the storage drive's health and free space — the most common cause of slowness.
- 2Look at RAM usage under your normal workload, and at startup and background software.
- 3Check temperatures under load to rule out dust-driven thermal throttling.
- 4Recommend the specific fix — SSD, RAM, clean-up or cooling service — and confirm your model supports it before proceeding.
What affects the cost
What's actually slowing it down
A software clean-up, a RAM upgrade, and an SSD upgrade are very different jobs — diagnosis decides which you need.
Whether your model can be upgraded
Some laptops have soldered RAM or non-standard drives that change what's possible.
Part capacity you choose
The size of the SSD or amount of RAM you opt for affects the parts cost.
We diagnose before we quote, so the exact price depends on what we actually find — not a guess.
Laptop running slow — common questions
1. Why has my laptop suddenly become so slow?
The most common causes are a nearly full or failing hard drive, too little RAM for what you run, background software and startup apps, thermal throttling from dust build-up, or malware. An older laptop still on a mechanical hard drive is the single biggest cause we see — moving to an SSD usually transforms it.
2. Will upgrading to an SSD really make my old laptop faster?
Yes, and it's usually the most noticeable upgrade you can make. A mechanical hard drive is the bottleneck on most older laptops; an SSD makes boot, app-loading, and file access dramatically quicker. We check your laptop supports it and migrate your data across.
3. Is a slow laptop worth repairing or should I replace it?
It depends on what's slowing it down and the laptop's age. A RAM or SSD upgrade often gives an older machine years more useful life for a fraction of a new laptop's cost. If the slowness comes from a failing board or a model that can't be upgraded, replacement may make more sense — we'll tell you honestly which applies.
Ready to upgrade?
If diagnosis points to storage or memory, our upgrade service handles compatibility and data migration.
Slow and hot?
If it slows down as it heats up, the real issue may be cooling.
